Zowel België als Nederland werden recent opgeschrikt door een toename van racistische en rechts-extremistische uitingen. In beide landen werd hierover vanuit diverse disciplines wetenschappelijk onderzoek verricht. Vaak echter ontbreekt de band met de praktijk. Nochtans werden in de praktijk diverse initiatieven ontwikkeld om racistische denkbeelden te bestrijden en om de groei van extreem-rechtse partijen af te remmen. De effectiviteit van deze initiatieven werd echter zelden getoetst, en over de aanpak van extreem-rechtse partijen bestaan nog heel wat twijfels, zoals onder meer blijkt uit de discussie over de zin van een 'cordon sanitaire'. Tussen wetenschap en praktijk gaapt dus een opvallende kloof. Met dit boek pogen tien wetenschappers uit Vlaanderen en Nederland deze kloof te overbruggen. Vanuit hun specifieke onderzoekspraktijk en discipline bieden ze een wetenschappelijk onderbouwde analyse aan, die tevens praktisch bruikbare aanbevelingen bevat ter bestrijding van racisme en rechts-extremisme. The author asks why people do not forget their national identity. He suggests that in daily life nationalism is constantly flagged in the media through routine symbols and habits of language. He is critical of orthodox theories in sociology, politics and social psychology for ignoring this core feature of national identity.
